Organic pest control has a reputation problem in India. Ask most farmers who’ve tried it and you’ll hear the same thing — it sounded good, they gave it a shot, and it didn’t work the way they hoped. So they went back to chemical pesticides and stayed there.
Some of that experience is fair. There are organic pest control products in the Indian market that genuinely don’t do much — poorly formulated, low active ingredient counts, sold on the back of the organic farming trend rather than actual field performance.
But some of it is also about how and when organic inputs are used. Organic crop protection works very differently from chemical pesticides — and if you approach it expecting the same instant knockdown effect, you’ll be disappointed every time.
This is an honest look at what actually works for pest and disease control in Indian crop conditions, what doesn’t, and what the realistic expectations should be.
Why organic pest control has a credibility problem in India
Chemical pesticides work fast and visibly. You spray, you see results within 24 to 48 hours. That feedback loop is powerful — farmers trust what they can see happening.
Organic inputs work more slowly and through different mechanisms. Trichoderma doesn’t kill the pathogen in the soil the way a chemical fungicide does — it outcompetes it, establishes in the root zone, and over time makes the pathogen less able to establish. Neem cake doesn’t spray pests off the plant — it creates soil and root conditions that deter soil pests and nematodes from thriving. These are real effects but they don’t look the same as a chemical knockdown.
The credibility problem comes partly from unmet expectations and partly from genuinely bad products. Not every trichoderma product on the market has a meaningful viable spore count. Not every neem cake is properly cold-pressed and unadulterated. When a poorly formulated product doesn’t perform, the whole category gets blamed.
This is why sourcing certified organic inputs — products that are ICAR recommended, ISO quality certified, and produced under documented manufacturing standards — matters more for organic pest control than almost any other product category.
What actually works — and how
Trichoderma Viride — for soil-borne disease control
Trichoderma Viride is a naturally occurring beneficial fungus that lives in soil and aggressively outcompetes harmful pathogens — particularly the ones responsible for root rot, wilt, damping-off, and collar rot. These are some of the most damaging and difficult-to-control diseases in Indian crop farming.
The way it works is through colonisation. When you introduce Trichoderma into the soil at or before planting, it establishes itself in the root zone and creates an environment that’s hostile to pathogens like Fusarium, Pythium, Rhizoctonia, and Phytophthora. It also produces enzymes that break down the cell walls of these pathogens directly.
In field conditions across India, Trichoderma Viride has shown consistent results in vegetable crops, fruit crops, cereals, and plantation crops — particularly for root rot and wilt management in tomato, chilli, brinjal, cotton, and banana.
The catch is timing. Trichoderma needs to be applied before disease pressure builds up — ideally at sowing or transplanting. Using it as a rescue treatment on a crop that’s already showing severe disease symptoms is much less effective than using it preventively. This is where most farmers who say it doesn’t work go wrong — they apply it too late and compare it to a chemical pesticide that’s applied at visible disease onset.

Neem cake — for soil pest and nematode management
Neem cake is the residue left after cold-pressing neem seeds for oil. It’s been used in Indian agriculture for decades and it works through two mechanisms — it acts as a slow-release organic fertilizer and it creates soil conditions that deter soil pests, nematodes, and some fungal pathogens.
The active compounds in neem — particularly Azadirachtin — are natural insect growth regulators. They don’t kill pests on contact the way a chemical insecticide does. Instead, they disrupt the lifecycle of soil pests and nematodes, reducing their ability to reproduce and establish in treated soil.
For vegetable crops, fruit trees, and sugarcane — where nematode damage and soil insect pressure are consistent problems — neem cake applied at basal dose during soil preparation is one of the most cost-effective and genuinely field-proven organic inputs available.
It also feeds the soil at the same time. Neem cake has an NPK profile of approximately 5:1:1 and adds organic matter that improves microbial activity. So you’re getting pest deterrence and soil nutrition from the same input.
What doesn’t work is expecting neem cake to control above-ground insect infestations. It’s a soil input. For foliar pest pressure — aphids, whiteflies, thrips — neem cake is not your answer. There are neem-based foliar sprays for that, but they’re a different product and a different application.
How to apply: Mix into soil at the time of land preparation or apply around the base of established plants and water in. Works best when incorporated into the root zone.
Mycorrhiza — for root health that reduces disease susceptibility
This one is less obvious as a pest and disease control tool but it belongs in this list because strong roots are your first line of defence against soil-borne disease.
Plants with well-established mycorrhizal networks develop denser, more extensive root systems that are physically harder for pathogens to penetrate. They also have better access to water and nutrients — which means they’re less stressed and more resilient when disease pressure does occur.
Mycorrhiza isn’t a pesticide. But in integrated organic crop management — where the goal is reducing overall disease pressure rather than reacting to individual outbreaks — it’s an input that makes everything else work better.

What doesn’t work — and why
Generic “organic sprays” with no active ingredient specification. The Indian market has a lot of products labelled organic pest control that don’t specify what the active ingredient is, at what concentration, or what it targets. Without this information you have no way of knowing whether the product does anything. A product that says “neem based organic pesticide” without specifying Azadirachtin content or cold-press neem derivation tells you very little.
Applying bio inputs as rescue treatments. Trichoderma applied to a crop already showing severe wilt symptoms is not going to reverse the damage. Neem cake applied after a heavy nematode infestation is established won’t clear it in one season. Organic inputs work best as prevention and early-stage management — not as the last resort after chemical options have failed.
Low spore count Trichoderma products. Trichoderma works through colonisation. If the viable spore count in the product is too low — which is common in poorly manufactured or poorly stored products — it won’t establish effectively in the soil regardless of application. Always buy from manufacturers who test and document their spore counts. ICAR recommended products are held to standards that address this directly.
Mixing incompatible inputs. Applying a chemical fungicide and Trichoderma at the same time will kill the Trichoderma. Chemical inputs and biological inputs need to be managed carefully — biological inputs should be applied when chemical residue levels in the soil are low. This is one of the reasons organic crop protection works better as a system rather than as an occasional add-on to a chemical-heavy program.
The realistic expectation
Organic pest control for crops in India works — but it works differently from chemical inputs and over a different timeframe.
In the first season, you’re unlikely to see the same knockdown effect you’d get from a chemical pesticide. What you should see is reduced disease incidence over the growing season, healthier root development, and plants that recover from stress more quickly.
By the second and third season, as soil biology improves and pathogen populations in the soil reduce, the difference becomes more visible.
